Maggie: 1 Month Old

I can’t believe my second child is one month old! Last night we were sitting at the dinner table and Justin looks at me and says, “Can you believe they’re ours? What more do we have to do to be considered an adult?” Sometimes I feel like I’m still just playing house and one day soon I’ll wake up and this life I’m living will all just be a dream.

But, since I don’t think that’s the case and my sweet little Margaret Grace is one month old, I guess it’s time for a baby update. In case you missed her birth story, check it out here and why she had to come two weeks early.

Typically the baby pros say babies tend to wake up around two weeks after their due date. Since Maggie came two weeks early we’ve pretty much just spent the past month snuggling a sleepy babe. She’s been the perfect transition baby to go from one child to two because as long as I could do things with one arm, life was pretty much the same.

MILESTONES

So far Maggie has just done a lost of sleeping and not much of anything else. About every 2-3 hours Maggie starts to stir, I feed her, within about 2-3 minutes her eyes are shut and once she’s done eating she’s back to sleep for a few hours. I swear this girl is a cat and sleeps about 23 hours out of the day. We haven’t seen her eyes for more than about 5 minutes at a time since she was born.

EATING

Unlike all the breastfeeding problems due to an undiagnosed tongue tie and lip tie with Clara, Maggie is eating and growing like a champ! She is completely breastfed and eats about 6-7 times a day. At the beginning she only ate about 5-10 minutes per side but over the past week it’s changed to about 10-15 minutes per side. Still much quicker than Clara ever was though.

When we were still in the hospital, a nurse brought me a nipple shield and said, “Here, you’ll probably need this for every baby to eat.” She knew my history of using a nipple shield for all 14 months with Clara and just figured it would help Maggie. When I saw another lactation consultant about a week later she told me “by 2017 you won’t have the shield.” So that was my goal! Once Maggie hit her birth weight two weeks ago I started working at weaning her off the shield and — knock on wood! — we haven’t used the shield in 3 days. How great is that?! I was scared to even mention it out loud for a few days but I think this girl is getting it!

SLEEPING

Like I mentioned earlier, Maggie still sleeps about 24/7. The majority of the time she just wants to sleep on us, which gets a little frustrating at night, but we’re figuring things out. She’s spent a number of nights in the swing and one of us on the couch.

A few months ago the American Academy of Pediatrics came out with a new recommendation that babies should stay in their parents’ room at night for a full year. Read more about it here. Clara slept in her nursery from really early on so I wasn’t sure what to do once I heard the new recommendation so I started researching options and asking around. We ended up buying this cosleeper mini crib that is working out amazing! So Maggie has her own little bed at night (when she isn’t in the swing) and space but she’s literally within arm’s reach of me.

Maggie sleeps so much that it’s rare to see her eyes. Whenever Clara sees eyes she yells, “I see baby Mah-ee eyes!” Or if she just wants to play she asks to “see baby Mah-ee eyes?” and attempts to open the baby’s eyes.

GROWTH

Chunking up and filling it. Born at 6 lbs 15 oz and dropping down to 6 lbs 6 oz after birth, this girl was a tiny little thing. As of our rough weigh on our home scale this morning, she’s far surpassed her birth weight and now weighs a whopping 8 lbs 9 oz. Way to go little one! Maggie is still fitting newborn clothes and newborn size diapers.

LIKES

Maggie likes sleeping, snuggling and her binky. Although we LOVE wubbanubs, she hasn’t quite mastered the art of keeping a wubbanub in her mouth quite yet so she uses a tiny binky. She definitely has moments where she wants nothing to do with a binky but for the most part it’s a favorite.

Oh, she also loves being all snuggly warm in the moby.

DISLIKES

She is a super chill baby and rarely cries or gets upset, beside when she gets poked in the eye by big sister.

RANDOM

Maggie was born with quite a bit of dark hair and so far she hasn’t lost much of it. It’ll be fun to see what color it turns out. Somedays I swear she’s going to be a red head since it’s certainly gotten lighter since birth.

I just can’t believe my little Maggie Grace is a month old already and it’s hard to remember what life was like before this little snuggle bug joined our family. People ask how it’s going having a second child and honestly, my answer is I love it. I don’t feel overwhelmed and we’re finding out groove. My dream has always been to be a stay at home mom and I feel like I’m right where I’m supposed to be.
