How to Make Matching Mommy and Baby Infinity Scarf

Everyone needs a matching mommy and baby infinity scarf. Learn how to make your own here in only a few simple steps with this easy tutorial!

As a little girl with two other sisters, I despised matching with my siblings. But lo and behold, when I came across these matching mommy and me infinity scarves I was so excited! But then the baby came, life got crazy, and I never got around to making them. Until I joined a Pinterest challenge with some of my bloggy friends to actually start doing more of the projects that we love on Pinterest. And, besides, this girl is a drooler!! Scarves are way more cuter than putting her in a bib all day everyday. So with that I want to show you all how to make your very own mommy and me infinity scarves!

Each month we are challenging each other to make something that we see on Pinterest rather than just ooing and awing over our lovely Pinterest boards.

Now, this is a super easy project to make. Here’s how to do it.

What you need to make a mommy and baby infinity scarf:

  • 1 yard of lightweight fabric
  • Scissors
  • Sewing Machine
  • Snap kit

First off, you’ll need about 1 yard of lightweight fabric you love. I bought mine from JoAnn’s with a coupon and paid less than $3.

So let’s start with mommy’s scarf. These are the easiest things ever to make and I’m not sure why I didn’t make myself one sooner. Grab one of your favorite infinity scarves that is the right length. Now, nothing has to be measured perfectly here but just use that to measure out the fabric for your scarf. Remember to double over the width since as an infinity scarf it is folded in half. (And I only say this because I forgot so had to improvise. Oops!)

Fabric and scissors.

Once you cut your fabric you’ll have a giant rectangle. Now fold over the edges about a quarter of an inch and iron it down. This will just make it easier for you to sew it down to give yourself a nice edge. If you like the rough, raw look, skip this step.

Once both edges are sewn, fold your fabric in half so the two leftover raw edges are together. Remember to make sure all the seams are on the same side. Now, sew a straight line about a quarter of an inch in and there we have it. A fantastic infinity scarf for mommy.

Now it’s baby’s turn. For this baby infinity scarf it’s actually not an infinity scarf, but I’ll explain that later. Start by cutting a rectangle out. Mine ended up being 24″ by about 12″. Again, does not need to be anything exact. Do the same thing you did with your scarf and iron the edges and then sew them down. Do this on the long sides of your rectangle.

Once that’s done, lay your rectangle on a flat surface and scrunch the long edges together. You can make a sort of an accordion type deal and then sew across the edge to keep it all together. This gives you the scrunchy scarf look that makes infinity scarves fun. Now, set that aside for a few minutes.

Take some of your extra fabric and fold it in half so that the printed sides are together. Cut out a little sock type shape and then sew it together like shown below.

Turn your fabric sock so that the right sides are facing out now and the seams are inside.

Now I forgot to take a picture of this part, but iron the edges of your sock so that the raw edge is inside and then take your accordion piece that you set aside and stuff the end inside the sock so they overlap about half an inch. This will make the edges better and give you a thinner section of fabric to add a snap to.

I’ve found that my little one does not always enjoy things going around her head, especially trying to wrap an infinity scarf around her, so adding a snap makes it easier for everyone involved. If you don’t already have one, you can pick up a snap tool (like this one) at your local craft store or Amazon sells them for fairly inexpensive.

Once you’ve attached your snap, you’re in business.  A complete matching mommy and me infinity scarves. You’ll be the cutest duo on the block! Or at least that’s what I keep telling myself.

  1. They are so cute! I would have put my daughter in a scarf that matched mine when she was a baby – at that age they have no say in the matter!
I love the little scarf in stead of a bib idea and the way you have made it makes it baby safe (an actually baby infinity scarf – not so much!) is great.

  2. These are super cute, Amanda! And lil’ Clara is a doll! I love how her’s snaps on the back!! Enjoy the rest of your weekend! :)

  3. I love the idea of using it instead of a bib; so much cuter. I’m definitely going to make a match pair for me and my little girl.

  4. Such an adorable idea….I love it that you and your baby have the same scarf. I don’t have any kids, so I wouldn’t be a customer right now, but I think the idea of selling this on Etsy is fabulous. They would be very popular!

  5. I made a mini infinity scarf following your instructions for my baby! It came out super cute and I love it! I used a thin, knit fabric, however I had issues sewing it into the sock shape because there were too many layers and it was too thick to sew through the machine. I ended up hand stitching it; it took a simple sewing project into a much longer project! Other than that, easy to follow steps. Thanks for the tutorial!

  6. I love you infinity scarves! I cut out a rectangle for a baby scarf, but find the instructions quite confusing. :( On the first scarf you say to sew the sides with a hem (I assume that’s what it is), but you don’t sway what side. ??? Should I first fold the rectangle in half length-wise, sew that seam and then sew the hems along the short lengths?

    Thanks :)

    1. Hi Fredette! Sorry for the confusion! Yes, sew the two long sides together with the right sides of the fabric together. Turn it right side out and then sew the two short sides together to create your infinity scarf. Hope that helps!

  7. I don’t understand the sock and snap part of the baby scarf. So I understand you gather one side, sew it but what happens to the other side? Just confused a little how to complete, wish their were more detailed photos.

    1. Hi Patty! Sorry you’re having difficulty! I just reread my post and realized I didn’t say you make two of those sock type shapes to go over each end. I’ll update that. Then you add the snaps to each side and you’re done. Hope that helps!

  8. Hello, I love the idea of the baby infinity scarf and can’t wait to make some for my little girl on the way! I just wanted to make sure that you scrunch the long sides (24in sides) versus the short sides (12in sides)? It makes the scarf very small but I know adding the sock will add some length. Just making sure I have the right sides. Thanks!
