Toddler Bedroom Design Plan

I can’t believe a week has already gone by since we kicked off the One Room Challenge with our before room last week. In case you missed it, head over here to see the room and our inspiration board for Clara’s toddler chic bedroom.

When I found out we were pregnant with baby #2, like any good dreamer, I started perusing Pinterest and the internet immediately for inspiration for Clara’s big girl room. And then I found this ruched comforter on sale at Target I knew we had our inspiration piece! Every decision thereafter has been based around this darling girly comforter and I’m so excited with how our design plans have come together and I’m excited to share them with you today.

Since Clara’s nursery is already purple, I knew I wanted to incorporate purple into her big girl room too so that many of the accessories could just be moved over since baby #2 has a whole new color scheme. See those fun nursery plans here!

Last week I shared our inspiration board that I created using Olioboard to start putting together all our ideas. This week I want to go a little more in depth into those design plans so you can see where we’re headed.

As I researched, I knew I didn’t want just a bedroom for Clara. I haven’t written much on the blog about Clara’s personality as she’s gotten older but I will say that this girl is one of the sweetest, most tender-hearted little children I know. If a baby cries, she’s sad. If someone is upset, she is upset. If someone is happy, she is happy. She is definitely a typical first born and tends to need her space. She has high-anxiety and gets easily overwhelmed in new spaces or when there are lots of people.

I know she is going to be SO excited to have a baby around all the time (she absolutely adores her little cousin!!), but knowing her, I know she is going to need a place to retreat to. As I looked at toddler bedroom’s I kept being drawn to the Montessori-inspired bedrooms for children.

Once I finish our One Room Challenge makeover, I plan to do a post explaining all that I’ve learned about having a Montessori-friendly environment at home, but until then, here’s how I would briefly explain it if you don’t know what it is…

A Montessori-inspired bedroom is based around the phrase “help me do it by myself.” A Montessori-friendly environment encourages children to achieve their potential through self care, independence, freedom within limits, and a respect for the child’s natural psychological, physical, and social development.

With that brief definition in mind, here’s our plan for the room.

  • Low bed for independence
  • Activities in the room
  • A reading corner with low seating
  • Low drawers to dress self
  • Child-size tools and utensils, including a child-size kitchen (she actually got this exact kitchen as a gift last Christmas and it is going to be perfect in her new room!)
  • Lots of organization and spaces for books and toys to encourage learning and independence
  • And of course, every little girl needs a glamorous chandelier!

I have loved using Itsum to plan out this room with our budget in mind. You can see our budget and plan in detail including links to many pieces of furniture we plan to use here on our Itsum Toddler Bedroom board.

If you follow me on Instagram than you know we had a busy week choosing paint colors. I’m going to go into much more details about that next week, but until then, here’s a little progress update photo!

The room is officially cleared out and the whole room is painted. I can’t wait to see the room start coming together now! Check out this Facebook video for a less than one minute video update on the progress we’ve made. P.S. 40 seconds in is my favorite!! Love that girl!
