How to Make Easy Garden Markers

Sometimes you want to sink a lot of time into something and make it super awesome. Sometimes you want it quick and dirty, but still super awesome. These garden markers fall into the quick and dirty category. All you need is some dollar store wooden spoons and a wood burning kit. I love this wood burning pen that you can grab right here if you don’t have one already. They come in super handy for all sorts of projects.

Garden markers can easily be an afterthought but I’m of the mindset that it’s the little things that count. You can certainly use the markers that come with your plants but they disappear easily and don’t look very good. So what’s a good crafter to do but make our own…and here’s how you can make some too.

In two simple steps, you can have your very own simple wooden spoon garden markers. First step, write the name of your plant on one of the wooden spoons. I recommend using a pencil so you can erase afterwards. If you want to get fancy, you can print your text in whatever font you want on transfer paper then rub it onto your spoon.

The next step is to burn the letters. Follow the lines, go slow, and try to be as consistent as possible. You should practice on a different piece of wood until you get a hang of your wood burning pen. Oh and just in full disclosure — making rounded letters with a wood-burning pen is not easy!!

At this point, you’re done! If you want to take your garden markers to the next level, you could stain them using your favorite stain or just keep them raw.

Place them in your garden beds and you’ll never forget where you planted your basil versus your thyme.
