If you remember, five weeks ago our bedroom looked like we were fresh out of college with little organization, a terrible use of space, mismatched furniture, and zero style. Check out all the boring master bedroom before pictures here!

Boring Master Bedroom Before Transformation

Let’s just say we did a full 180 and I’M IN LOVE!

Image of monochrome master bedroom

As a refresher, I shared back in week 2 that we planned on creating a monochrome bedroom using mostly black and white with some gray.

We tackled a lot of projects that we have never done before — like installing laminate flooring, doing board and batten, and adding new trim and baseboards — but the learning curve was totally worth it.

Boring Master Bedroom Before Transformation

Tricorn black doors

We started by taking off all the trim, ripping up carpet, and giving the ceiling a fresh coat of Ceiling Bright White SW 7007. The doors got a nice coat of Tricorn Black SW 6258 and the walls got the biggest paint transformation with Peppercorn SW 7674. I love how the combination with the dark gray, black doors, and contrasting white makes such a big impact.

You can get all the details on the neutral paint colors in this post.

I put together this fun timelapse video for you showing the full transformation! Check it out and then get all the details and sources below.

After all the work, it really all came down to the details. Let me show you!

Matte black fan in modern bedroom

That matte black fan from Home Depot looks amazing and I’m so glad we decided to switch out the boring, white fan! It comes with a remote that I store in my nightstand to turn the light on and off and change the fan speed. No more having to shuffle to bed hoping you don’t trip over something after turning off the light.

Plus, the black looks so sleek against the bright white ceiling.

We had planned on transforming our old IKEA bed into a tufted headboard, however, after buying most of the material we realized the whole DIY project would cost much more than buying a new bed and would take a lot of time.

I’m so glad we decided to do that! We found this upholstered bed on sale for less than $150!

Modern bed with black and white duvet cover

I bought a 24×36 inch canvas with a 40% off coupon at Joann’s and we painted the abstract painting using an old rag and black craft paint to hang above the bed. The frame is simple corner moulding cut at 45 degrees and nailed directly to the frame. I love how the frame sits a little off the canvas to give a floating effect.

These simple white nightstands from IKEA are the perfect addition next to the bed. I love that they have a drawer and a shelf. We added a simple black drawer pull and found matching 10″ ones for the dresser.

Nightstand in modern bedroom

Speaking of the dresser, that black and white dresser you see is actually an IKEA Malm dresser makeover! I’m hoping to have a post up early next week to share all the details, but let me show you what the dresser looked like assembled before I got my hands on it!

Simple IKEA malm dresser

Very simple. And here’s what it looks like now…

Malm dresser makeover

I love that it gives some more stark contrast with the white and black and looks so clean. Plus, we finally have drawers that pull out! I never realized how much I missed that while we were using our old wood dresser and plastic container drawers!!

Ever since I made this DIY necklace holder with copper pipes it hasn’t really had a home, but I made it knowing that we were planning to makeover our bedroom. I love that it finally has a nice spot to show off — oh, and hold my favorite necklaces and bracelets.

Hanging necklace image

Just like with the necklace holder, I’m so glad this hexagon shelf finally found a permanent home in our modern bedroom. It was hands down my favorite project from my 28 days of Naptime Craft Time series in February and I love that I now get to see it every day!

Hexagon shelf in modern bedroom

Across the room, next to the window, I hung one of the super easy hexagon shelves I made with popsicle sticks to tie in the wood hexagon shelf on the opposite wall.

On top of one nightstand is a frame, a faux plant, and a dark stained wooden cube…or is it?

Modern IKEA Nightstand image

That little black cube is actually our clock!

I hate alarm clocks because the glow keeps me up at night, but I really love knowing the time because #momlife and I’m up at every hour it seems. Rather than looking at my phone to see the time and potentially getting distracted — well, let’s be honest, I get distracted 95% of the time and miss out on precious sleep — I went on a hunt for the perfect simple clock that didn’t glow.

Now if I want to know the time in the middle of the night I just have to lightly tap my nightstand and it tells me the time and then we have it set to go off after about 30 seconds. So handy! It also tells the temperature and we can set an alarm clock if we want. So awesome!!

A few years ago I made a sign with our wedding vows on it for our room, but the weathered look never quite fit us. This square black frame I picked up at HomeGoods was perfect for holding an image with our wedding vows and anniversary date!

Minimalist nightstand clock

The wall sconces framing the bed were the perfect addition to give us a little light at night and helped pull in a few natural wood elements that we wanted in the space. I love that the light is also dimmable which is perfect for a bedroom.

Now, let’s talk about the floor for a sec. We were worried if we went with wood floors they would be too cold in the morning. Surprisingly they are not cold at all!

These laminate floor planks are extra wide and gorgeous! I can’t imagine how lame our room would have looked if we didn’t go with the wood floors.

Laminate Flooring from Select Surfaces in monochrome master bedroom

Check out all my thoughts on laminate flooring in this post from a few week’s ago, but, long story short, we LOVE the laminate flooring! We chose flooring from the Elite collection at Select Surfaces. It installed easy and looks gorgeous!!

If you have Sam’s Club nearby, check out your local store to order your own laminate flooring from Select Surfaces.

I have always dreamed of having wood floors with a long rug in our bedroom. This faux sheepskin rug that I ordered online from Home Depot was perfect to add a little warmth and cozy.

We wanted about 7x9ft so we ordered the 8×11 ft rug and then cut it down to the size we wanted. It was slightly terrifying cutting up our gorgeous new rug, but it turned out amazing and I’m so glad we did it!

Tip: If you’re planning on buying something from Home Depot, order online and pick up in store so you don’t have to lug stuff around the store. Plus, if they don’t carry it in your local store it’s free delivery to your home. Win!!

Modern Monochrome Bedroom image

I would say about 85% of the decor and furniture came from some of my late night online decor shopping sprees. I love being able to “window shop” from the couch and can gather all the items I find from so many different stores on to one Pinterest board.

This little reading corner was high on my must list when I was planning out the layout of this room. My husband and I are both readers and I feel like, especially with little kids, we really needed a decent chair in our bedroom. The modern wire basket was pretty cheap and perfect for holding all the random blankets and pillows that gather on the floor at night.

Modern tufted chair and Opal House Light

If you read my modern accent chairs roundup post you know that I was super torn on what chair to get! Well, we went with this tufted charcoal chair that I found on sale for less than $150 and is great quality!! It’s a little smaller than I expected but actually works perfectly for our space. The pillow on the accent chair was a Target find.

The rattan tripod floor lamp is super sturdy and from Target’s new collection, Opalhouse. I love it so much!!

If you’re new around here, you might not know that my husband and I have known each other since diapers and best friends since middle school. Needless to say, we have a lot of photos together. Lots of memories and trips and prom and football games. I wanted a fun way to gather some of my favorite photos of us (sans kids) so I came up with this layout to display them.

Collage image in frame

It actually was really simple. I just perused Facebook one night, saved my favorite photos, cropped them using the Photos app to a square, edited them using the dramatic effect (I lowered the saturation on some of them) in the iPhone photos app so they all looked cohesive, and then transferred them to my computer. From there I aligned them in a grid and had the image printed at Costco as an 11×14.

I love how it turned out and Clara loves looking through it and asking about each picture. It’s fun to walk down memory lane with her and it’s a simple ode to our past.

Now, let’s talk about the closet for a minute…

Five weeks ago it looked like a tornado blew through and half of the closet was barely usable since the door opened into the closet.

Boring Master Bedroom Before Transformation

One major purge later and some grunt work on my husband’s part, and we have a like new walk-in closet.

Modern bedroom small walk-in closet

Between donating over 180 clothing items (yes, I counted for taxes purposes) and now having a set of drawers that we can actually use daily, the closet looks brand new!

The addition of matching thin black hangers from IKEA that were dirt cheap and a black shelf liner really helps pull it all together. I also found us a new laundry basket that doesn’t have a lid so I don’t use it to pile clothes (rather than hanging them up) and it’s easier to tell when it’s time to do laundry.

Closet in modern bedroom

We’ve been living in our modern bedroom for a week now and so far I am loving the new and improved closet. I am SO glad we decided to change the way the door swings even though it was a pain in the butt carving out notches in our brand new pretty trim.

Black and White Textiles

Oh, and of course we can’t forget to talk about the textiles…

On our bed we started with this brush stroked grid duvet set. I love the contrast and simplicity of it, however, once we got it on the bed it was super stark white compared to everything else in the space. After testing it on a pillowcase first, I ended up soaking it in some hot tea water for 3 minutes and then throwing it in the washer.

Bed

It was subtle enough to take away the extreme white and blend in a little better with the off-white pillows that are also on the bed.

As for the pillows, both the large square pillows and the lumbar pillows are from IKEA. The black sheet set are these microfiber sheets I found on Amazon about 6 months ago that I am completely obsessed with along with half the world! Check out the number of reviews on those sheets!! They are so good and an amazing deal!!

The black knitted chunky blanket is from AllModern and the perfect addition to throw on our bed and snuggle in during the cold nights.

Pillows on modern bed

Like I mentioned in my online decor shopping tips post, it’s important to look at images in the reviews section when buying online. The color blocked curtains look really shiny online, but, in person, they are a soft material. I just threw them in the dryer with a damp towel to soften them up.

The geometric prism curtain rod was an awesome find at World Market that I spray painted matte black.

The Faux vs Real Debate

Can we talk for a minute about plants? Let’s just say I have a VERY black thumb….and, no, it’s not from digging in the dirt. Y’know how they say if you can keep a pet alive and a plant then you’re good to have kids? Ya, well I never could do that. I finally gave up and figured 1 out of 2 was good enough.

I literally kill everything. Orchids, succulents, terrariums….you name it! If someone says it’s a low-maintenance, hard-to-kill plant, well give it to me because I will prove you wrong.

But here’s the thing, I really wanted some greenery in our room. So, I put together a mix of real and faux plants and am going to work my darndest to keep the real peace lily plant alive. If it survives a few months then I might try adding a second plant. Wish me luck!

Do you think having a mix of faux and real is okay or does it just look cheap? I’m hoping you can’t notice!
