How to Throw the Best Christmas Cookie Decorating Party

Looking to throw the BEST Christmas cookie decorating party? This is a super fun holiday party idea for kids AND adults and easy to throw together.

When you have three birthdays within six days of each other in your family of four you realize party planning might need to get simplified a bit. When it came time to plan Mini Me’s third birthday party she had no idea what she wanted. She isn’t really attached to any characters in books or movies and doesn’t really have one favorite thing so I figured it was a good opportunity for me to plan what I thought would be fun for her and her little friends.

The one thing she was able to tell me was that she wanted a chocolate cake with chocolate sprinkles. Great. Check. I can handle that.

I’ve always thought it would be fun to throw a Christmas cookie decorating party so decided this was the perfect opportunity.

I thought I’d show you how to pull off this party for the holidays and I’ll give you some tips on how to make it even easier if you need some time-saving hacks like we did.

So, let’s start with my favorite piece of parties…decor.

Simple Christmas Decor

December is already crazy busy, so let’s make it easier on yourself with simple decor! This bundle of Christmas colored balloons on Etsy would be perfect if you have time to order them.

I just ran to my local party store, grabbed some balloons in different shades of red and green and hung them from the ceiling with string and tacks.

I’ve made circle garlands for many parties in the past, however, since I was trying to save time I decided to just buy one at the store. It was like $4 and totally worth the money! Grab one super similar to the one I had here.

I had been wanting a tree in our dining room so this party was the perfect excuse. We just bought a small tree, I strung some lights on it, and then wrapped some simple cream yarn I had in my craft closet around it. With one skein I was able to wrap the tree and hang some on the wall.

The other highlight of the decor was my new letterboard!! I’ve been eyeing them on Instagram and grabbed this letterboard from Mandi at Vintage Revivals with a killer Black Friday sale she was running.

For the table I just used scrapbook paper and red/green paper plates and it helped contain the mess a little bit.

Prep Ahead

Prep is the key to making party day less stressful! You can buy your toppings up to a week before your party. The toppings we included were:

  • Mini m&m’s
  • Regular m&m’s (buy the seasonal bag to match your party color scheme)
  • Candy cane pieces
  • Seasonal colored sixlets
  • Red, green, and white gumdrops

Feel free to make your cookies before party day and just throw them in the freezer. If you don’t love baking, no worries. Head to the bakery section at your grocery store and see what type of plain cookies they have available.

We had gingerbread men, gingerbread stockings, sugar cookie Christmas trees, and sugar cookie snowflakes.

This is the gingerbread recipe we used and this is the sugar cookie recipe.

I say “we” because let’s be honest…my husband did all the baking. I decorate and run around like a chicken with my head cut off while he makes desserts for most parties.

Make It Kid-Friendly

Whenever possible, have lots of containers with the same type of toppings so kids don’t have to fight over toppings.

Use squirt bottles for frosting rather than a bowl and spreader is also handy so the kids can be as independent as possible. Since Clara’s still pretty little she needed help, but she sure loved being able to help decide where the frosting was put.

Please note the mess. This was near the end of the party and it looks like a tornado blew through, but it was totally worth it. Such a fun party!

Here’s what I suggest having on hand:

Clara had such a fun time and loved snatching as much candy as she could while we didn’t look.

P.S. Isn’t her dress just the cutest? I found it on Amazon and it’s seriously the best quality! Clothes on Amazon are always a little hit or miss, but this dress is so thick and made of a super soft material. Highly recommend! It was the perfect addition to our Christmas card pictures this year too! Get the dress here.

We had such a fun time throwing this Christmas cookie decorating party and were all decked out in ugly Christmas sweaters. This is an easy party to throw for your friends and family to get in the holiday spirit. Blast some Christmas music, throw Elf up on the TV for those that don’t want to decorate cookies, and have fun!
