The way we decorate our house can have a big impact on our mental health, and the styles we use should be one of the key things to consider, particularly when it comes to the purpose of each room.
It’s more and more important considering how we decorate in line with our mental health, particularly as more of us do struggle with our mental health than ever before. After all, the increased numbers seeing therapists, speaking out about mental health struggles and even checking into alcohol and drug rehab is quite staggering.
Across the world there are many styles that are well suited to decorating to improve our mental health, so if you’re looking for a bit of inspiration, here are five styles you should consider…
Scandinavian Hygge
Originating from Denmark, the concept of hygge (pronounced “hoo-gah”) emphasises cosiness, simplicity, and warmth. Scandinavian decor, characterised by clean lines, neutral colours, and natural materials like wood and wool, promotes a sense of tranquillity. Hygge encourages the use of soft lighting, such as candles and soft lamps, which can have a calming effect on the mind. Incorporate plush throws, comfortable furniture, and minimalist accessories to create a serene Scandinavian-inspired sanctuary that encourages relaxation and mindfulness.
Japanese Zen
Drawing from Zen Buddhist principles, Japanese decor embodies simplicity, minimalism, and a connection to nature. Zen interiors are characterised by clean spaces, natural materials like bamboo and stone, and a subdued colour palette of earthy tones. Incorporate elements such as shoji screens, tatami mats, and bonsai plants to evoke a sense of tranquillity and balance. The uncluttered nature of Japanese decor promotes mental clarity and mindfulness, making it ideal for reducing stress and promoting a sense of inner peace.
Mediterranean Coastal
Inspired by the sunny shores of countries like Greece and Italy, Mediterranean coastal decor exudes warmth, vibrancy, and relaxation. This style incorporates colours reminiscent of the sea and sky—think shades of blue, white, and sandy beige. Use natural textures like rattan, terracotta, and ceramics to add depth and warmth to your space. Decorate with hand-painted tiles, lush greenery, and sea-inspired accents like shells and driftwood. The laid-back Mediterranean vibe promotes a sense of escapism and relaxation, encouraging a positive state of mind.
Indian Bohemian
Bohemian decor takes inspiration from the colourful and eclectic aesthetic of India, blending rich textiles, intricate patterns, and vibrant hues. Embrace the boho style with layers of textiles such as embroidered cushions, kantha throws, and tapestries. Incorporate jewel-toned colours like deep purples, burnt oranges, and emerald greens to create a sensory-rich environment. Fill your space with plants, twinkling fairy lights, and vintage or handcrafted furniture to infuse a sense of warmth and creativity. The free-spirited nature of boho decor encourages self-expression and joy, fostering a positive atmosphere.
Feng Shui
Feng Shui, an ancient Chinese practice, focuses on harmonising energy flow (chi) within a space to promote health and well-being. Implement Feng Shui principles by arranging furniture to facilitate a smooth flow of energy, using mirrors to reflect light and expand space, and incorporating elements of nature like water features or indoor plants. Select colours thought to enhance specific energies—calming blues for serenity, energising greens for balance, or warm earth tones for grounding. By embracing Feng Shui principles, you can create a harmonious environment that supports emotional equilibrium and mental clarity.
