Incredibly durable, naturally weather and water-resistant and with a high oil content at its heart, teak offers many benefits as a material for your garden furniture. (It’s also very straightforward to clean and, what’s more, you can reuse, recycle and repurpose it.)
Clearly, outdoor tables, chairs and so on are also a wonderful way of helping make the transition from indoors to the outside world, seamlessly.
But where do you start when it comes to choosing the right items for your al fresco space? It’s not too late in the year to transform your open-air area with some new teak garden furniture and here, we take a look at some of the things to consider when restyling your garden.
How will you use your garden?
First of all, think about how you will use your garden. Do you want a highly sociable space, or lots of quiet reading spots and sunloungers, al fresco family dining or a little bit of everything? This will inform the furniture you choose, and help you to decide what you need to buy, and in what quantities.
Positioning your furniture
Think about available space and where you want your furniture to go. And if you look at where the sun falls at different times of day, natural locations my emerge. For example, you may want to place a chair where you can enjoy an early-morning coffee before the day gets going in a different location to a teak garden dining set, which should get plenty of early-evening sun. Take legroom into account when making your choice, too.
Consider your garden size
This is arguably one of the biggest limitations on your choice, and it’s all about making the available space work for you.
If you’re garden is not the biggest, be careful not to overcrowd it. Fewer larger pieces rather than multiple smaller ones may be best.
And if you don’t have a paved, level area, think about where is dry and level so you can do this without it sinking into the ground or sitting at an angle. (Apart from anything else, grass and soil can rot the feet of your furniture.)
Finally, if you don’t have a paved area, bring in your items off the grass each night once you’re ready to turn in.
If you are lucky enough to have a patio, again think of its size and how you picture yourselves enjoying the space. This will help you decide whether you just want a lounger or two or a full dining set.
One useful rule of thumb, by the way, is to take up more than two-thirds of your patio with garden furniture, since beyond this the area can start to look a little cluttered. It’s important not to under or overwhelm this space with your pieces. As with so many other things, less can often be more.
Outdoor dining and entertaining
Whether you’re moving the family outdoors for a balmy midweek supper, or having a few friends round at the weekend, you garden furniture can cater for all scenarios. Consider sociable bench seating, or bar stools as a way of keeping the party going.
The right style for your space
Think about your immediate environment when purchasing your garden furniture, just as you would for inside your home. One helpful starting point is to consider whether you want items to contrast with or complement your property. So, for example, if your house is very modern, you could either create a cosy, comfy contrast with your garden furniture, or go for a complement in the form of lots of minimalist lines.
If what you really want a cohesive look, opt for furniture which reflects both your home and its garden.
As a couple of final pointers, think about how much upkeep and maintenance and upkeep your chosen items will require, and their potential impact on the environment. Teak scores highly on both counts, being low-maintenance. Equally its natural oils make it naturally pest-resistant, so you can grow this wood without using chemicals or insecticides. And you can always make sure you buy from a trusted, sustainable source.
