Supplies for a modern desk lamp:

  • 25 – 3″ square 1/4” birch plywood
  • Wood glue
  • Clamps
  • 1” Forstner bit
  • 1/2” Forstner bit
  • Hanging light bulb socket
  • Chisel
  • Mallet
  • Painter’s tape

Instructions

1. Cut

Cut plywood into 3” squares — need 24 total. After you cut down your plywood into a 3″ strip using a table saw, clamp a block on your miter saw 3″ away from the blade then you can easily cut each square without having to measure each time.

2. Sand

Sand all the edges of your squares prior to gluing if you plan to do any alignment other than straight.

There are three different ways you can align your lamp base depending on personal preference: straight, spiral, or staggered. I posted these three photos on Instagram and let readers vote and spiral won.

3. Glue

Divide your plywood squares into three equal stacks and glue each square together in the alignment you want.

4. Clamp

Clamp each section together until the glue is dry.

5. Drill

Using a Forstner bit, drill a 1” hole in the middle of the top section to hold the light socket.

Drill a 1/2” hole in the middle of the other two sections to hold the light cord.

6. Chisel

Chisel out a section on the bottom stack to hold the light cord so the lamp can sit flat on your desktop.

7. Tape & Paint

Tape off the bottom 4 squares and paint them if you wish.

8. Cord

Once paint is dry, feed the cord through the stacked sections.

9. Glue

Glue the three stacks together to form one spiral and clamp it all together.
